Craig Ion

Craig Ion is the Coordinator for Parking & Local Laws at Maribyrnong City Council

Personal Statement:

I have been in the local government parking industry for the past 31 years, and employed at some of the largest and most innovative councils in Australia. Brisbane, Melbourne, Gold Coast, Moonee Valley, and Maribyrnong, where I have been the coordinator of parking and local laws for the last 16 years, heading a team of 80 staff.

The parking industry in the past 10 years has seen many significant advances in innovation and technologies. Advancements I have been involved in include, the expansion and adoption of in-ground sensors being adopted into mainstream enforcement use, new ticketless car park and payment technologies and licence plate recognition technology, to name a few.

The industry needs leadership to promote such technology with an open mind and a willingness to learn research and expand knowledge of these new innovations to promote safe work and smart city development.

Spending so many years in enforcement, I am well versed in state legislation in relation to parking enforcement and look forward to being part of a team working with the federal and state governments in discussions and development of new legislations.

I would be a committed board member and look forward to attending board meetings in and outside for hours and look forward to attending future local and interstate seminars, as well as being a voice and ear to members and relaying their input concerns.

I understand the role and responsibilities as a board director and have the specialised knowledge of the legal requirements of the industry to make decisions at a board level.
